Born in Darkness

The winter solstice marks the longest night of the year.

We often celebrate it as the return of the light, but here's the thing: the light returns little by little. The darkness doesn't simply disappear because we've reached the turning point.

And perhaps it doesn't need to.

Beneath the winter soil, roots continue to grow. They reach deeper into the earth, drawing nourishment from what surrounds them, carrying the energy gathered during the brighter months.

The darkness isn't empty. It's full of possibility.

It is a place of protection, where we can grow and create without needing to reveal what is still becoming.

As we approach the winter solstice, we gather at the threshold of the year's deepest darkness to birth drums with our own hands, honoring the creative power that exists within each of us and the ancestral traditions of rhythm that connect people across the world.

The Drum Birthing Experience

Join Willow Woods for an immersive ceremonial drum-building experience rooted in animism, intention, and relationship with the natural world.

Through three guided drum journeys, you'll connect with the hide, the wooden frame, and the completed instrument as you bring your own ceremonial drum into being.

Together, we'll work with natural materials, explore the craft of drum building, and bless our newly created instruments through communal drumming as they begin to dry.

Our closing drum blessing will incorporate a winter solstice ritual, honoring the darkness that protects what is still becoming and the drums we've brought into being.

A drum born in darkness, to hold whatever darkness you may need to move through.
